Course Objective

An intensive two-year course in the heart of India, the MFA Filmmaking trains to a professional level in a full range of filmmaking skills. Students leave with a portfolio of directing, cinematography, editing, producing and sound credits on various campus and professional productions- usually many more. The school produces around will produce many films each year on this particular programme.

Our program mentors Post Graduate creative professionals and filmmakers, animators in the traditions and innovations of an evolving media landscape that is deeply rooted in visual storytelling.

Learning is based around short film production. Each semester these film exercises become more technically sophisticated, more considered and more complex in their ambitions. The school specifies the skill base for each exercise, providing the equipment and training students to new levels in each of the various craft skills. Students make all aesthetic decisions, while solving problems similar to those faced by professional units, on a steeply increasing slope of difficulty. The work is constantly assessed and critiqued. We believe that Film directing classes are not theoretical explorations; they are practical classes designed to put candidates in the director’s chair as quickly as possible. Candidates are encouraged to take creative risks and find their own voices as visual artists.

The MFA Film program offers candidates over 2,000 hours of hands-on instruction and production experience, as they complete 100 credits. Throughout their time here, our MFA Film candidates will shoot projects on 16mm film, 35mm film, High-Def, Super 16mm, and the RED Dragon camera system. All projects are edited digitally.

By the end of the MFA Film program, our graduates are expected to build a holistic skillset that includes all major aspects of the filmmaking craft, gain an enormous amount of production experience, and create at least 2-3 films of their own.

This is the core of Jagran School of Visual Arts & Design method. Students learn by applying themselves to aesthetic and practical problems generated by the actual process of filmmaking. This is why the school pushes through so many productions, and why students have more opportunities to work on films than they can realistically take up.

In addition to mastering the filmmaking craft, Students of MFA also start to understand the nuances of cinema studies. The minds of Cinema Studies students start whirring when the title credits roll. They know movements in film history backwards and forwards.

During their time here, MFA Filmmaking students will hone their critical voice; develop a trained eye and ear, and practice in-depth, careful analysis of moving images.
